COPING WITH VIOLENCE - Myra Blyth & Graham Sparkes

Thursday 4th November 2004

It is widely believed that we live in a society where violence against persons and things is on the increase. There is a real fear of being caught up in and being the victim of violence, especially among some of the more vulnerable. For those encountering different forms of aggression and violence what is the proper and reasonable response? How do we cope with our own inner violence? These are all real pastoral issues.

Myra Blyth teaches at Regents Park College, Oxford, having previously worked, inter alia, for the World Council of Churches and the Baptist Union.

Graham Sparkes is Mission Advisor, with special interest in social issues, for the Baptist Union of Great Britain. Both have been engaged in researching into pastoral issues in relation to violence.

READING THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES - INTERPRETING TODAY'S WORLD IN THE PASTORAL CONTEXT - Bryan Appleyard (journalist and writer)

Monday 23rd May 2005

Pastoral practice does not take place in a vacuum; nor does it find it easy to engage with the way we are all inevitably affected by the public world, whether directly or indirectly. It is important, therefore, to be aware not only of the events and trends of the day but how they impact on our lives practically and emotionally. Bryan Appleyard will lead a discussion of some of the major current issues in order to draw out the pastoral pressures and practical responses.

Bryan Appleyard is an award winning, freelance journalist, having been on the staff of the Times 1976-84. He has written and taught widely on the arts, social trends and the impact of science. His latest book (2005) is Aliens: why are they here?

(CACEC) THE CARDIFF ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CENTRE runs an extensive range of courses in Christian theology, Bible, and the wider culture.
