Forthcoming BIAPT Conference 2008: Worship, Spirituality and Practical Theology?

This year's BIAPT conference will be held at Trinity College, Bristol on 15-17 July, 2008. Keynote speakers are Cheryl Hunt (School of Education and Lifelong Learning, The University of Exeter), Nicola Slee (Queen's Foundation for Ecumencial Theological Education, Birmingham) and Pete Ward (Dept. of Education and Professional Studies, King's College, London).

Speakers

Cheryl HuntCheryl Hunt - Spirituality as a Dimension of Professional Practice.

Cheryl worked in adult/community education for many years before moving from Yorkshire to Devon in 2003. She is currently Senior Lecturer in Professional Learning in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of Exeter. She directs the Doctoral Programme in Education (EdD) and the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice.

Cheryl is an Executive Editor of Teaching in Higher Education and a long-standing Council member and former Honorary Secretary of the Standing Conference on University Teaching and Research in the Education of Adults (SCUTREA). Her particular research interests are in critical reflective practice and spirituality in the context of lifelong learning. She recently convened an ESRC Seminar Series on this topic. Nicola SleeNicola Slee - The Praxis of Prayer as a Form of Practical Theology.

Nicola Slee is a theologian and poet based at the Queen’s Foundation, Birmingham, where she teaches feminist and contextual theology. She also works freelance, doing a wide range of writing, speaking and retreat work, with a particular interest in women’s spirituality, faith development, liturgy and poetry.

The author of numerous articles, she has also written Faith and Feminism (DLT, 2003), Women’s Faith Development: Patterns and Processes (Ashgate, 2004), Praying like a Woman (SPCK, 2004) and, most recently, The Book of Mary (SPCK, 2007).

Pete Ward - Reflection: Practical Theology as Participation in God.

Pete Ward teaches at King’s College, London . He helped inaugurate ‘Oxford Youth Works’, a youth ministry training programme and was later to become Archbishop George Carey’s advisor for youth ministry.

Pete has recently published Liquid Church which explores the thesis that the church, rather than floating or rising above culture, needs to become like the water itself, internalizing the nature of culture.

Pete has also written God at the Mall (Hendrickson, 1999) and is currently working on the relationship between cultural studies and theology.

Short Papers / Workshops

We invite participants to contribute short papers, presentations—verbal or otherwise, workshops or discussions. These should consist of up to 20 minutes of input with a further 20 minutes allowed for discussion. Topics related to the conference theme are welcome, but contributors can tackle any area within the very broad discipline of practical theology. We are keen to include a specific stream of participants’ contributions from the field of education.
